The Animals
A Note:Of Pelts and Manes
On Pelts- Because no one can be certain what the pelt colors and lengths were on prehistoric animals, we can only make educated guesses as to what they might have been. As lengths go, it's easy to speculate that the further north your character's heritage is, the longer and/or thicker their pelt should be. As far as color goes, the same rule applies. Wherever your character's lineage comes from, their pelt color should relatively indicate what the terrain is like. Grayscale, monotone markings for the northern snowlands, shades of black and brown for the shadowed forest, tans and rusty browns for the red rocks on the hills, and so on. Markings are completely free-range as long as they don't look like anything specific (Japanese lettering, hieroglyphics, zodiac signs, etc.).
On Manes- Again, as no one can be quite sure wether cave paintings only depicted young males with tufts of mane, no one can be sure the extent of these cats' mane growth or wether or not sexual dimorphism had occurred. As such, any length of mane and any gender may or may not have a mane if you so desire. The only rule here is that its color must not clash with your character's pelt color (brown mane/white and black pelt, red mane/brown pelt, etc.).

[li]Cave Lions
These northern cats are well adapted to any home they well choose, having both brain and brawn hidden under their thick coats. Although most of them enjoy hunting on level ground, some adventurous ones are skilled in the caves where the also make their dens. Prides are small groups of one to two males and two to five females (usually cousins/sisters). They use the traditional lion hunting tactic where one or two lions drive the herd into a group of hidden lionesses. Lone lions are usually adolescents or young adults who were chased off or left their birth pride in order to start their own.
-Height: 3-4 ft (at the shoulders)
-Weight: 550-650 lbs

- Saber-toothed Cats (Sabers)
These felines are iconic both in stature and prowess. However, they have the disadvantage of being the biggest predator on the face of the earth- a well known threat that everyone keeps an eye out for. Small prides of one or two males and two to five females (usually sisters/cousins) are common. These cats are ambush hunter, but are also not above swiping kills from other predators. Lone sabers are usually adolescents or young adults who were chased off or left their birth pride in order to start their own, but some do choose to stay on their own.
-Height: 3-4.5 ft (at the shoulder)
-Weight: 575 to 875 lb
- Scimitar Cats
Generally the smallest of the big cat world, Scimitars have in interesting frame. Their legs are hyena-like, front legs being longer than the back, but they are agile, cunning and never without an idea for a good trick. These smaller felines know how to get out of almost any situation with all four limbs in-tact. While Scimitars can scavenge, they prefer young game to stealing directly from larger predators. Scimitars are generally loners, but do come together in tough times in order to be able to hunt larger prey.
-Height: 3-3.5 ft (at the shoulder)
-Weight: 330–500 lbs
Carnivores:
- Dire Wolves
The most annoying rivals in the area have to be the canines. They tend to be better in organized hunting groups than the cats and to make matters worse, their constant barking and howling drives the rest of the herds off before anyone else can make a kill. They're found all over, but generally enjoy plains, hills, and lightly forested areas. There's nothing they won't hunt, so it's best to keep an eye out for them at all times, particularly around your favorite hunting grounds. They're also not above making a meal out of a little lost cub.
-Height: 2.5-3 ft (at the shoulder)
-Weight: 100-175 lbs
- Cave Bears
Although more herbivore than their modern cousins, cave bears are a big enough competitor and threat to make it to this list. In times of famine, cave bears will chase lone cats off their kills. They also keep a watchful eye out for cat cubs and have made a habit of raiding dens. Cave bears are typically found in forested areas and mountain ranges, procuring the best caves for their lengthy winter hibernation.
-Height: 6-9 ft (standing)
-Weight: 500 - 1,000 lbs - Giant Hyenas
Not much is known about this beast other than it's irritating habit of chasing cats off their kills using their larger numbers. They're not seen hunting unless times are tough in the way of prey, so when one is spotted, you can assume that someone's made a kill close by. They're mostly found in plains and shrubland.
-Height: 3-3.5 ft (at the shoulder)
-Weight: 100-250 lbs
Prey:
[/blockquote]- Macrauchenia (Macras)
A long-necked, camel-like creature with a short trunk found in herds. Found in lightly forested areas grazing on tree leaves.
-Height: 10 ft (to the head)
-Weight: 1 tone
- Wooly Mammoth
The largest mammal of the era, and adult mammoth commands respect as an ageless icon of the time. Calves, however, are free game. They can be found in herds along the edge of the tundra, preferring to feed on the stunted trees that grow that far north.
-Height: 12 ft (to the head)
-Weight: 3.5 tons - Mastodon
The second largest elephant-like species, the mastodon prefers warmer climate compared to its cousin. They can be found in large herds in southern forested areas.
-Height: 9 ft (to the head)
-Weight: 5 tones - Wooly Rhino
A dangerous prey, the wooly rhino lives in small herds in the northern tundra and is a favored trophy. Few can boast hunting this formidable beast to a successful kill, because usually it's the hunter that dies.
-Height: 6 ft (at the shoulder)
-Weight: 3 tons - Daeodon
These pig-like creatures are nothing less than a bad attitude with legs. They're mostly found among the bushes in plains and hills and can be a major threat to cubs.
-Height: 6 ft (at the shoulder)
-Weight: 2 tons - Glyptodon (Glyptos)
The armadillos of the ice age, glyptos carry dommed armor on their backs, so they are a tricky target. They are not picky about climate, and so are found almost everywhere, typically in pairs.
-Height: 5 ft (to the top of the dome)
-Weight: 1 ton - Irish Elk
Found in large herds, these deer are one of the largest to have ever existed. They're the most abundant of prey, and most likely to be on everyone's menus.
-Height: 7 ft (at the shoulder)
-Weight: 1 ton - Chalicotherium (Chalicos)
Perhaps the strangest creature on four "legs", Chalicos have long arms and walk on their knuckles in order to keep their long claws sharp. They feed on just about anything they can find in the plains and hills as they forage in small groups of four or more.
-Height: 6.5 ft (at the shoulder)
-Weight: 1 ton - Giant Ground Sloths
In small groups of no more than five, Megatherium would be a great threat to all had it not been for the fact that they're generally peaceful until confronted. Hunting these animals, as with the Chalico, is, to say the least, a challenge.
-Height: 10 ft (sitting upright)
-Weight: 4 tons
